How to Save (MORE) Money Shopping Resale

We’re going to keep this one real simple: yes, you already know you can get great pieces at great prices on resale apps. Whether it’s an every-day t-shirt or a luxury bag, resale apps are excellent options for when you know you want something and you know you definitely don’t want to pay full price for that something. After all, have you seen the stock market and gas prices? Yeah.

Here are three simple, tried-and-true practices to weave into your resale shopping routines:

1) Negotiate

For peer-to-peer platforms like Poshmark and Depop, negotiation is the name of the game. One of my favorite negotiation tactics on Poshmark: Submit an offer. Add the item to a bundle and leave a private comment to the tune of, “Hoping you’ll consider my offer, many thanks!” If someone declines your offer, ask if they’re able and willing to negotiate. Some sellers may not be, but you’ll never know if you don’t try.

2) Like and wait

Consignment platforms like The RealReal, thredUP, Rebag, and Fashionphile drop their prices over time to help move inventory — meaning that if you’re patient, you can score some really good deals by holding out hope that no one else will snag the item before you’re ready to pull the trigger. I’ll often keep an item favorited for weeks, sometimes months, before making the purchase. There’s risk involved with this, of course; sometimes someone else will the buy the item and you’ll be out of luck. But I’ve purchased items for several hundred dollars less than what they were originally listed at by using this tactic effectively.

3) Shop with your credit

Who doesn’t love free money? Many platforms incentivize buyers to use their credit earned by selling on platform by kicking in an extra bonus. For example, The RealReal adds an extra 5%. thredUP chips in a 10-20% bonus if you spend your credit on certain brands or designers, like Frame, Fabletics, Reformation, and Gap. Many brick-and-mortar stores also play this game to keep customers shopping in store — next time you find a great local consignment store, ask!
