On Heels & Working From Home

I was recently catching up with a friend and we were gushing (ugh, cringey word?) about recent fashion resale and consignment purchases. She shared with me she had her eye on a gorgeous, unique Louis Vuitton piece and was waiting for the price to drop (don’t you dare think I’m linking you to her beloved). I shared that a pair of fabulous, black sequined Miu Miu heels recently arrived and I held them with the care of a newborn baby so we could admire in the Zoom light.

At the risk of sounding completely insufferable, here’s a little secret I’ll let you in on: I love wearing a heel when working from home. There’s something about being in a heel that has a very real psychological effect on how I present myself and my work output and outcomes. Maybe it takes me back to when I used to “play business” as a kid, or maybe it’s rooted in actual research, like this study. But let me tell you, when I have a heel on, there’s no stopping me.

Bethenny Frankel talks often about how she works from home in her PJs — I have great admiration and respect for Bethenny’s business and philanthropic endeavors, but working in PJs sounds like a complete oxymoron to my brain. When I’m in PJs, my brain is programmed to be watching Sex and The City and curled under a blanket. Maybe a movie. Maybe Seinfeld reruns.

But a heel? Oh, that’s transformative. In a heel, I can fly. In a heel, I command the attention of a room. In a heel, I make money. In a heel, I make a difference. In a heel, I move forward and up, up, up.

(And yes, before I get hate mail about the medical dangers of wearing heels, I’m aware. I am mid-30s, after all — my hips and knees know. I didn’t say I walked miles in them. But I won’t say they don’t give me the confidence to try.)

If you’re feeling ambitious — and I’d like to think you are — here are a few lovely close-toed heels currently on the market from The RealReal, Tradesy, Vestiare Collective, Fashionphile, and thredUP. You’re welcome.
