What's In A Name?

I was asked a simple question the other day:

“What does ‘The Sequin Lead’ mean?”

Somehow, I’ve never had to actually explain this one before. So if you’re interested, here we go:

Once upon a time, I imagined the basis of what has become today’s Sequin Lead as a destination where style enthusiasts could come for a “pick of the day” — a great deal, a beautiful piece, a one-of-a-kind item found on a resale platform that I would highlight for a lucky someone. Coming from a traditional media background, I imagined this “pick of the day” as an element of the “front page news” for anyone and everyone who appreciated style and the circular fashion economy. With the '“front page news” thing in mind, I brainstormed a number of potential names for this concept: The So and So Post, The So and So Times, The So and So Journal… and landed on The So and So Lead, a play on the spelling of “lede” (IYKYK, media/journalism/marketing/PR people).

So, what would the “So and So” part be? The obvious candidates like The Fashion Lead or The Resale Lead weren’t resonating for me. So I thought about what felt personal and fun to me: sequins. I love a sparkly, special piece — and for anyone who has ever looked through my closet, you know I’ve got some sequins in there, ranging from whacky and vintage to gorgeous and true art. Plus, “sequin,” to me, represented something special. Not the boring, not the mundane — I wanted this to be a special front page destination. And so, The Sequin Lead was born.

Of course, The Sequin Lead has evolved since then, and will certainly continue to evolve. Thanks for being on this ride with us — but we’ve gotta know: what did you think ‘The Sequin Lead’ meant? Let us know.
